The Complete Fishing Tutorial

Accessibility TLDR:

The /fish catch command can be used to select equipment and locations for fishing or to begin fishing. When fishing, move your tool to the shadow you want to catch and avoid any mines. You can view, sell, and manage the creatures you’ve caught with /fish buckets. You have limited bucket space, but you can increase space and unlock bucket slots with /fish skills. Earn points for upgrading fish skills by completing Skill Challenges found in the /fish guide. The fish guide also has useful info about creatures you can catch, NPCs, and locations. Display your favorite fish in your /fish tank and add decorations to make it stand out. You can earn rewards from the Season Pass available in /fish season or purchase fishing-related items in the /fish shop. Compete against others and try to be number one on the daily /fish leaderboard.

The fishing command is an expansive command with tons of features. It has multiple types of tools, baits, and locations to explore, a personal guidebook filled with resources and your fishing stats, skill challenges and upgrades, daily competitions, NPCs who visit while you fish, and more!

The easiest way to get into the new command is to start fishing and complete the interactive tutorial, so when you’re ready to begin, try /fish catch to get started. If there is something you are confused about, you can find more details about every aspect of the fishing system below.

Fishing Baits and Tools

The tools and baits with the fishing command differ from other items you’ll find in Dank Memer and do not appear in your normal /inventory. You can read more about why fishing-related items are special here, but the biggest reason for the change is that it gives us way more possibilities for the features we can add.

You can view your fishing equipment in your /fish guide or with the /fish catch command. If you use /fish catch, you can choose your equipment and location and immediately start fishing.

The basic fish catch embed.

By default, everyone has the bare hand “tool” to use, but it cannot use bait or catch bosses. You can unlock more tools and different baits by finding them as rewards in other places around the bot, like the fish season pass. As you look at your tools in the /fish catch equipment menu, you'll notice each tool has some positive buffs that give you a boost and a few negatives to consider. Review each tool trait carefully before fishing to make sure it will work for what you want to catch.

Each bait and tool has a limited number of uses except the bare hand. All other tools lose some durability every time you fish, while baits lose durability only when you catch something because of the bait. Some tools can be used to catch items, bosses, and even multiple fish at a time, and the various baits offer special effects to enhance your fishing.

Sometimes, there may also be Random Timed Fishing Events. When one is available, you will see it mentioned on the /fish catch embed before you begin fishing.

Fishing Locations and NPCs

After selecting your equipment, decide where you want to fish. Each location has different creatures to catch and NPCs to meet, but some locations are only available for a limited time. Traveling to different locations takes time, but you can shorten the wait by upgrading some /fish skills.

Traveling to a new location.

You can also fast-travel by using gems to arrive instantly or press the cancel button to return to your previous location to fish. If you want to catch every possible fish, make sure to check out all locations while they are available. Once you visit a location, you’ll unlock a page for it in your /fish guide, where you can see the possible creatures and NPCs you can encounter there.

NPCs will only be in one location per day, so if you’re looking for a specific character, make sure to choose your fishing location wisely. When an NPC visits, they may offer you a gift, ask you to trade, assign you a task, give you advice, and more.

If an NPC likes you, they will visit more often and offer better rewards during their visits. If you don’t like what they have to offer, you can decline their request or ignore the trade. Use the NPC pages in /fish guide to see where they might be and how they feel about you.

Catching Creatures

Once you’ve selected your equipment and arrived at your location, it’s time to fish! When fishing, you’ll see one or more dark shadows in the water. These can be creatures to catch, items, or dangerous mines!

Fish catch mini-game.

Use the arrows to navigate your tool to the shadow you want to catch, and avoid going over any mines! If you go over a mine, you’ll end the turn. The mine will damage any fishing tools you use except your bare hand, making your tools break sooner.

As you begin catching different creatures, you’ll notice your bucket space under the fishing game will begin to fill up. Fishing creatures do not go to your regular inventory. Instead, they go into special fish buckets. You have limited bucket storage space, and depending on which tool you are fishing with, your bucket(s) can fill up quickly.

Full bucket notice.

When your bucket is full, you can continue fishing for XP, but you won’t be able to keep any of the creatures you catch until you make space in your bucket.

Managing Buckets and Selling Fish

Every user starts with one bucket and two bucket slots by default. To unlock more bucket slots, you must unlock the Storage Specialist trait in /fish skills. There are five possible bucket slots you can unlock through skills and a sixth optional bucket slot you can unlock for a short time with gems. You can find a variety of buckets to unlock in the gem shop, fishing shop, season pass rewards, and other areas in the bot. Each bucket has a different capacity, but you can increase a bucket’s storage with skills.

To view your bucket slots, buckets, and the creatures they hold, use the /fish buckets command. From this command, you can organize, sell, and even rename your fish. You can also change which bucket you have equipped or lock a bucket to protect the fish inside from being sold.

Viewing your fish buckets.

When you sell fish, you’ll be given the option to sell them for coins or Fish Tokens. Some fish are worth more coins or Fish Tokens than others. To make the most money, pick and choose which fish you sell for tokens and which for coins. You’ll want to trade at least some fish for Fish Tokens so you can purchase fishing-related items from the /fish shop. If you want to keep track of all of the creatures you capture and sell, you can see them in /fish log.

For more information about how buckets and bucket slots work and detailed instructions on selecting only a portion of your creatures to sell, check out the Managing Buckets and Fish Tutorial.

The Fishing Shop

Once you earn some Fish Tokens by selling your fish, you can purchase fish-related items and supplies in the /fish shop. The shop often has baits, tools, fish tank decorations, buckets, and more.

The fishing shop

Some items in the fishing shop won’t unlock until you become better friends with a specific NPC. If you want to unlock an item that is blocked by an NPC, try visiting a location the NPC likes and make sure to be nice to them! Being nice and helping an NPC will increase your reputation.

Other items in the fish shop require you to unlock the Shop Keeper trait in /fish skills. There are also some traits that help you lower the price of items in the fishing shop.

If you need more Fish Tokens, you can earn extra from the fish season pass or fishing adventure.

Fish Season Pass

Every creature you catch while fishing gives XP, but the XP is not for the regular leveling system in Dank Memer. You do get XP for regular leveling when running fishing commands, but the XP you receive for each creature you catch goes toward special fishing rewards called the Season Pass. You can view the current season pass rewards with the /fish season command.

Fish season, the Season of the Frozen Heart.

The current fishing season pass is the “Season of the Booty.” While completing tiers, you can earn fishing tools, baits, Fish Tokens, Skin Fragments, seasonal skins and items, multipliers, coins, and more. The free track of rewards is available to anyone until the end date listed on /fish season, but if you want more time and rewards, you can upgrade your pass to the Season Premium Pass.

The Season Pass offers 100 tiers of rewards, so you can earn nonstop while fishing. Anyone who buys the premium pass can continue working on unlocking the rewards even after the pass has been retired, and you’ll never lose access.

To purchase the Season’s Premium Pass, click the upgrade button on the /fish season command or select the Season Pass in the gem shop.

Season Pass upgrade options.

The Season Premium Pass+ version adds an extra bonus of instantly adding 25 tiers to your current tier level, unlocking all of the rewards from those tiers for you.

As you unlock rewards, you can claim them with a button on the /fish season embed, so things like multipliers can be activated when you want them instead of instantly applied.

Every few months, the current season pass will be retired, and a new one will be released. If you want to earn all of the rewards offered in a season pass, you have to unlock them before the season ends or upgrade to the Season Premium Pass. People who upgrade their pass will have access to the season forever, so they can work on it until they’ve unlocked every reward.

If you are a premium subscriber on the website or Patreon, remember you get 10% more gems with every gem purchase from the Dank Memer Store, saving you money on the Season Premium Pass.

Fish Guide

The /fish guide command will be your best friend while fishing. It tells you where to find each fish, what time they are available, where NPCs hang out, the Skill Challenges you can complete to earn skill points, and tons of other useful information.

At first, each guide page will be relatively empty, but as you catch each type of fish, visit a location, and meet an NPC, the pages will begin to fill up with the information you’ve learned and your personal stats. If you want to complete your guidebook, you have to fill in all of the information on every page until there are no shadows or question marks.

Throughout each page, you can also browse stats on how many fish you’ve caught with different tools, at different locations, with a specific bait, and more.

As you unlock all the possible information on a page in the guidebook, the page will be marked as complete. You can see your completion data on the /fish guide summary page at the front of the book. If you are having trouble figuring out some missing data, talk with friends to see when a fish might be available so you can catch it.

Skill Challenges and Upgrades

Some of the most important pages of the /fish guide are the skill challenge pages. The Skill Challenges are fun, random challenges that allow you to earn skill points you can use to unlock and upgrade different fishing skills.

Some of the challenges are extremely straightforward and simple, like catching 1000 saltwater creatures, while other challenges are extremely specific and will even tell you what day something has to be completed.

Skill Challenges page.

The challenges are meant to be fun, but they also can take time to complete because the skills you can unlock in /fish skills can be extremely beneficial. There are skills for everything, such as unlocking bucket slots, increasing fish sell prices, shortening the fish cooldown, improving rewards from NPCs, and tons more. Each skill category has multiple levels with increasing benefits.

Fish skills list.

There is even an idle fishing machine you can unlock with the AFK skill! The machine will fish for you, and all you have to do is use /fish idle and press start. You can collect fish throughout the day while it is running, or you can wait until you receive a DM telling you the machine is full.

The idle fishing machine.

The idle fishing machine can catch all types of fish from the available locations, and it’s a great way to keep making profits with minimal effort. If you upgrade the AFK skill, you can even equip baits and pick where the idle machine will fish.

There are tons of skills to discover and choose from, but there are a limited number of skill points available, and you cannot unlock every single tier of every skill. If you regret where you’ve assigned your points, you can reset all of your points once every three days, or you can use gems to bypass the wait. Resetting your points removes them so you can apply them again in a new place.

Daily Leaderboards

If the Skill Challenges aren’t enough for you and you prefer competing against other users, try the /fish leaderboard. Every day, there is a leaderboard for one location, one NPC, one tool, one bait, and three fish that you can compete to be #1 on.

Fishing location leaderboard.

Scores on the leaderboard are not purely based on the time spent with an NPC or the number of fish caught, and many details can factor into your ranking. You can read more about how points are assigned in the Fishing Leaderboards Tutorial.

You can check your progress throughout the day with the /fish leaderboard command, and if you are struggling, remember to look for skills you can upgrade to help you advance.

The winner each day will receive a DM announcing they’ve won and some special rewards. All rewards are given instantly and added to your account, so you don’t have to claim anything.

Fish Tank and Decorations

If you want to show off a fish you’ve caught or save a special fish, you can put it in your fish tank. If one fish tank isn't enough, you can purchase more from the /fish shop command. Use the /fish buckets command to move the fish you want to save to your fish tank. The fish tank is the last option when choosing where to move a fish to. Once in the tank, the fish will rotate each time you refresh the page and move around throughout the day when you check on it.

Fish tank and decorations.

Fish in your tank won’t be sold when you sell your other fish, and you can keep them as long as you want. You can also unlock fish tank decorations to customize your tank. Check out a few in the /fish season rewards and in the /fish shop.

Each fish tank can only hold a certain number of fish and decorations at a time, but there are skills you can upgrade to let your fish tank hold more. To see what decorations you have available, do /fish tank and click the “Manage” button.

You can also use the /fish tank command to view other people’s fish tanks and see what sort of fish they are saving. If you want to give your fish special names to display, you can rename ones in your tank with the “Manage” button or use the /fish buckets command for ones outside of your tank.
